Amy’s story

It was half classroom based and half practical instruction on the train, I was tested throughout the course and there was a lot of pressure.

It was half classroom based and half practical instruction on the train, I was tested throughout the course and there was a lot of pressure.
Amy Joined the company in 2010 having previously worked for Heathrow Express as train dispatcher and selling tickets. Prior to this she was also a Production Assistant for the BBC Shows strictly Come Dancing and Top Gear. However, Amy wanted a job that was for life and having a mum that is a Tube Train Driver gave Amy the idea that she would too become a Train Driver.
Amy took note of an advert for trainee drivers and went for it! At the time the company was looking for people who were able to follow rules and procedures, people who have good concentration and didn't mind shift work. Amy believed that with the skills she had developed in her earlier career she would be a good candidate.
Amy was provided with 8 months' intensive training to fully equip her to become a safe and competent driver.
"It was half classroom based and half practical instruction on the train, I was tested throughout the course and there was a lot of pressure".
Whilst Arriva Rail London has made good progress in appointing women into driver roles, the proportion of male drivers greatly outweighs women drivers. Amy's story demonstrates that it's possible for women to become train drivers too at Arriva Rail London!
