Brighter Stations, Calmer Journeys: Arriva Rail London, Network Rail and Transport for London bring nature to the Lioness line

10 September 2025

As we mark World Suicide Prevention Day, it’s a timely moment to reflect on how our surrounding environment can support mental health and wellbeing. The spaces we move through every day – like train stations – can play a quiet but powerful role in helping people feel safe, seen and uplifted.

Arriva Rail London (ARL), Network Rail (NR) and Transport for London (TfL) have collaborated on the ‘Brighter Stations Project’ to bring a fresh burst of colour and creativity to the London Overground network. Passengers travelling along the Lioness line will now be greeted with vibrant new wall art installations at four key stations: Bushey, Kilburn High Road, Hatch End and Headstone Lane.

In total, 36 unique artworks have been installed – nine at each station – alongside panels that provide insight into the themes and purpose behind the project, helping passengers connect with the stories and inspiration behind the visuals. The artworks feature vibrant scenes of nature, photographed by NR colleagues in the North West and Central regions.

The idea was first proposed by NR’s West Coast South team, who approached ARL with the idea to enhance the station environment and uplift the passenger experience through art. Research has shown that looking at photographs of nature can positively impact mood and wellbeing.

The wall art offers a quiet moment of pause and reflection for passengers whilst awaiting their train. Whether it’s a brief glance or a longer moment of appreciation, these installations invite people to slow down, take a breath, and reconnect with the calm of nature – even in the middle of a busy commute.
