From Train Cab to Tatami Mat: Meet the operations trainer using judo skills to inspire colleagues
22 September 2025

Meet Rob Edwards, an operations trainer at ARL whose passion for judo has shaped both his personal and professional journey. From a tearful first session as a child to winning medals on the world stage, Rob’s story is one of perseverance, learning, and inspiring others -whether in the dojo or the driver’s cab.
Tell us about your journey into judo.
I cried all the way through my first judo session! I was only five and clearly didn’t enjoy it. But I came back when I was 10 and I was hooked. I enjoyed the technical elements and discipline, as well as the physical challenge. In my 20s, I focused more on football, but I returned to judo in my early 30s, and I’m now a third dan black belt.
What’s your proudest judo achievement?
Winning a medal at the World Masters games. It took place in Taiwan in May 2025, with 25,000 competitors across 33 different sports. I hadn’t realised how big it was, but it was on the local news and every billboard! I competed in the under 73 kilo class of the 50 to 54 age category. The competition was tough, especially from the Japanese players, but I won the bronze – a huge step-up from anything I had done previously.
Has judo influenced your work life?
Judo coaching inspired a career change. After helping out with some coaching at my judo club, I found I enjoyed passing on my knowledge. So, I thought, maybe it could be the same at work too? I had been a driver for seven years, and I applied for the driver instructor role. I was an instructor for two years and then I’ve been an operations trainer for about five years. It’s very rewarding seeing new drivers come through and develop.
Are there any similarities between coaching judo and training drivers?
My coaching style is similar in judo and work. I offer guidance that encourages people to discover and learn for themselves. There are definitely transferable skills between the two disciplines.
